Saint Nicholas' birthday is December 6th...
Saint Nicholas is thought of as the main gift giver in many places of the world. His birthday, December 6th, is the main day that he gives gifts...Children are interviewed in many places of the world to see if theyare being kind, good, responsible and generous to others...
Small treats are left in shoes or stockings for children.
the Original St. Nicholas was born in Pastora, Turkey. His parents were wealthy but they died in an epidemic. Nicholas was a young child; yet he followed the Nicholas used his inheritance to help the sick, needy, and suffering people all around him.
Christian rule:"sell what you have and give it to the poor"....
He was the Bishop of Myra while young and he gained a good reputation.
The Roman Emperor Diocletian exiled and imprisoned St. Nicholas for his beliefs...

I believe I read that Jesus said to sell what you have & give the money to the poor & then follow him. I wish I was more of a believer, but I do believe if we could all give what we have to the most needy, the world would be a much better place. ~Mary

And here's another view, having studied hagiology I recall Francis and Claire of Assisi started the idea of throwing off your material goods (not sell) and give what you had to the poor. Either or, a noble thing to do, most difficult in this materialistic time.

Natalie my sweet friend, as to Nicholas of Myra, yes you're very accurate. The actual history scribed by his contemporaries is that one day, he found a man whose daughters had no money for their dowry thus no chance of marrying. In the night he dropped a purse of coins thru their window, and they awoke to the happy surprise. This started the practice of giving young people gifts on or near the birthday of Nicholas. Has nothing to do with Jesus. "Santa Claus" is just another name in another language for the same man, Nicholas. The tradition of Christmas giving has nothing at all to do with the birth of Jesus, it's the birth of St. Nicholas. Jesus's birth is still uncertain but it's generally believed to have been during the harvest season, or around October, using the Julian calendar. In my post I explain how the two got mixed together (Christmas, the birthday of St. Nicholas, became mixed with the birthday of Jesus) I know you know all this already lol. Thanks for stopping by to warm the heart of an old friend.

Mary: If you got your info from the Bible then you know it's hearsay, passed down thru many languages and lost in translations a thousandfold. Jesus never spoke one single word in the Bible. So I like your idea of just being humans who are kind and giving to one another, just for the sake of being decent and caring. The problem is, those who profit from keeping people separate, hating and waring with each other, don't want the world to be "a better place" they want it in chaos since that's how they continue to enrich themselves. Peace in our time is a dream, but we live in hope.
